INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Led by Vice President for International Development Adam Blackwell, the staff members and consultants who make up DSG’s International Development Practice are recognized worldwide for their ability to apply the best of science to address the global community’s greatest challenges: conflict and crisis, democracy and governance, security, agriculture and food security, economic growth, education, environment, or global health. As part of our international portfolio, DSG in 2020 began its Global Terrorism Trends and Analysis Center Speaker Series, a lecture series featuring experts in counterterrorism.

The experience of our international development staff members and consultants includes partnering with bilateral and multilateral donor agencies, government officials, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based organizations to realize positive change, particularly for at-risk populations.

DSG’s international practice has two main areas of concentration. First, we seek to understand how different national and local contexts shape the interactions between criminal actors inside and outside the United States. We have engaged in this work to prevent terrorism, sex trafficking, and drug trafficking.

Second, we assist with the integration of individuals once they immigrate to the United States, while preserving their cultural traditions and commitments. For example, we have translated the best science about health and well-being into a wide range of languages and consumer-friendly formats, using approaches that are meaningful to individuals from diverse cultures. In our translation efforts, we have taken the best science about health and well-being, and translated it to appropriate formats and languages.

FEATURED PROJECTS IN INTERNATIONAL

Research and Evaluation

DSG engages in original quantitative and data analytics research to shed light on broad patterns within international illicit trade networks and markets. We also conduct systematic research reviews, meta-analyses, and secondary data analysis on key topics.

DSG is an established leader in database management and in using large datasets to assess and chronicle international risks. For the U.S. State Department, we designed, developed, and manage a congressionally mandated database on international terrorism incidents.

Training and Technical Assistance

Our primary mechanism for engaging in training and technical assistance in our International Development Practice area has been strategic partnerships with key officials and agencies. Representative efforts have included helping law enforcement agencies in Honduras and Mexico address drug trafficking within Central America and decrease the strength of international criminal actors such as the gang MS–13.
